The KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS was founded by Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney in New Haven, Connecticut on October 2, 1882. Fr. McGivney noticed 19th century Connecticut was marked by many anti-Catholic prejudice, a growing presence of fraternal organizations, and dangerous working conditions. Recognizing this, Fr. McGivney established an organization(Knights of Columbus) to prevent men from entering secret societies antithetical to Church teachings, Uniting Catholic men, and help family members of deceased members. They chose Christopher Columbus as their patron, to demonstrate there loyalty to country as well as their faith, for Christopher Columbus was celebrated as the discoverer of America, and also was Catholic.
FAITH SERVE PROTECT DEFEND We help men and their families grow closer to Christ, and we assist them with our councils' programs to live and spread the Catholic faith.
